Self Study for Sleep Technology
This online course meets BRPT's Self-Study program requirements, covering polysomnographic procedures and sleep disorder classification. Suitable for CPSGT or RPSGT exam eligibility seekers, it offers a Certificate of Completion, with hands-on training recommended for practical application.
Course Overview
Introduction
This online-only and self-guided course of instruction will review content in all the sections required by the BRPT to be considered a STAR-designated Self-Study education program. The entire seminar totals 299 video lessons that are sub-grouped into 14 distinct sections. The entire seminar totals 25.5 video-contact hours. This course is considered to be an introductory course into sleep technology and will help establish a strong foundation for fundamental learning the key concepts for a career as a polysomnographic technologist, commonly referred to as a Sleep Tech.
What You'll Learn
- Understand the functionality and troubleshooting skills of polysomnographic instrumentation.
- Perform polysomnographic procedures and protocols based on the AAST Technical Guidelines.
- How to interact with and educate patients on sleep hygiene, sleep disorders, and treatment considerations.
- How to perform waveform recognition for the scoring and analysis of sleep stages, arousals, limb movements, and sleep-related breathing disorders, like obstructive sleep apnea, based on the AASM Manual for Scoring.
- How to recognize the essential features of the other common sleep disorders related like Insomnia, Parasomnia, Hypersomnia, Circadian Rhythm Disorders, and Movement Disorders based on the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition.
Who Is This Course For?
The ideal candidate will be seeking CPSGT exam eligibility through BRPT’s Pathway #1 for Clinical Experience and/or Pathway #3 for Focused Training. The candidate may also be seeking RPSGT exam eligibility through BRPT’s Pathway #1 Clinical Experience and/or Pathway #4 Focused Training. This course is ideal for individuals who are just entering the field of sleep technology, re-entering the field of sleep technology after 3+ years of absence from the field, or those needing to gain exam eligibility.
Prerequisites
No prior experience in sleep technology is required. However, those with a general knowledge of medical terminology, patient/employee safety concepts, verbal and written communication skills, ethics, patient confidentiality, basic patient care and emergency procedures, basic math skills and calculations as well as computer skills would be helpful, but not required as all of these items are reviewed in this course.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, you'll receive a Certificate of Completion to showcase your completion of this introductory course on sleep technology. This Certificate of Completion is what is needed to submit your CPSGT / RPSGT exam application to the BRPT.

Frequently asked questions
If you have any further questions, feel free to contact our support team.
After you purchase and enroll into a course, you'll be given access to your own student dashboard. There you'll find all the courses you're enrolled in. You'll also be able to manage your user profile, view/download certificates, view order histories, and monitor course completion progress.
Our courses follow a microlearning approach, breaking down each lesson into two parts:
- A concise on-screen video presentation.
- A brief quiz that covers the specific topics discussed in the previous video.
We intentionally structure our courses this way because we've found that presenting information in short, focused bursts significantly enhances retention rates and improves understanding.
On average, our video lessons are about 5 minutes long. Some of our more complex topics may reach up to 15 minutes long, while others can be as short as 1 minute long.
Upon completing each video lesson, you'll have the option to rewatch it as many times as you wish or proceed to the quiz. You'll also have the ability to come back to watch or reference the video lesson as needed between quiz attempts.
After each lesson, you'll be prompted to take a brief quiz comprising of about 5 questions, depending on how long the video was. These quizzes are not timed, and you'll have multiple attempts to achieve a passing grade.
To advance, you need to earn a passing grade of 80% on the quiz. You can rewatch the video lesson between quiz attempts if needed.
There are 3 ways you can download your certificates. The method we recommend is to:
- Login to your dashboard, and click your name in the top right corner.
- Then click "My Account".
- Navigate to the Certificates tab, then click "View" next to the certificate you want to view.
- Then click "Download PDF". If it asks you to allow downloads, click "Allow".
We like to suggest this method because it makes viewing and downloading multiple certificates at once quick and easy. If you run into any trouble, contact us, and we'll help you out.
